Years 7 to 12 German and Spanish are offered at Horsham College.
Throughout Year 7, students have a one semester ‘taster’ of both German and Spanish, enabling them to make a more informed language choice for Year 8. In Year 8 students elect to study either German or Spanish for the full school year.
SEALP students are required to continue with their chosen language pathway in Year 9, whilst non SEALP students may also elect to further continue their language studies if they wish to.
It is a pre-requisite that students complete a full year of Year 10 German or Spanish if they wish to continue into VCE. Students who successfully complete a language at VCE (Year 12) level and meet other prescribed requirements are also eligible for the VCE (Baccalaureate).
There are a range of other opportunities available to language students. German and Spanish cultural activities are offered as part of the Harmony Day celebrations in March
Students in Years 7 to 9 who are studying German are eligible to compete in the Wimmera Mallee German Regional Poetry Competition, which is held locally in July each year. Winners from this event are then able to compete in the State Final held in Melbourne in August.
The Bayerischer Jugendring (BJR) Exchange is also available to students in Years 10 and 11. Students apply to host an exchange student from Germany for ten weeks (February to April), before travelling back to Germany to complete the ten week reciprocal part of the exchange (November to January).
